Joseph Mbatia Njoroge ‘Bertiers’ obsession with art was ridiculed by his parents until an in-law prophetically intervened, convincing the family that this might well be his future livelihood.  With a diploma in commercial art, Bertiers started his career as a sign writer-cum painter in a local market.

‘Finding a nickname for yourself was what all teenage boys at my (Mutu-ini High) school did, so I just played around with names until I came up with Bertiers, which many people tell me sounds French.”

With political campaigns in full swing for the 2022 General Elections, this exhibition offers a satirical view of Kenyan political circus over the years in the characteristic Bertiers’ style of chaos and entertainment.
