An immersive multimedia exhibition that celebrates the diverse origins of the Swahili people living along the coastline of Eastern Africa.

Lionel Lauret is an artist from Reunion Island and a graduate of the School of Decoratives Arts of Strasbourg. His art combines the magical, the imaginary, history and poetry. “Portraits of WaSwahili” is inspired by one of the artist’s multitemporal artwork, Le Peuple Infini, that retraces the multiple origins and cultures of the inhabitants of Reunion Island.

The artwork has been developed in partnership with the National Museus of Kenya’s Heritage Training Institute (NMK-HTI) based in Mombasa, with music by Lelele Africa, a Mombasa based taarab band led by Mbarak Ali-Haji.

The artwork fuses visual art, derived from historical images, to music by Lelele Africa, a Mombasa based taarab band led by Mbarak Ali Haji, to portray the fascination history of WaSwahili.
