Readings from two novels published in the late 1960s. A Grain of Wheat (1967) is set in the wake of the Mau Mau rebellion and on the cusp of Kenya’s independence from Britain. Belle du Seigneur (1968) revolves around the love affair of a Jewish man and a Protestant aristocrat against the backdrop of an impending war and the growing anti-Semitism in Europe.
