Modelled on the 1962 Makerere Conference on African literature in the English language – if not impact, at least in spirit.  We revolutionised publishing by taking the bull by the horns and venturing into self publishing.  We used the internet to give ourselves a voice and a market, we created book clubs and some of us went ahead to create bookshops, we have identified the gaps in the publishing market space and have taken the initiative to fill them. All this has been unstructured, leaderless, spontaneous and voluntary, like most revolutions. But perhaps it’s now time to start thinking strategically – what can we do to make self publishing sustainable?
